What you need for a wax seal
- Sealing wax – as beads or as a stick, see below
- A wax seal stamp – it presses the design into the warm wax
- Something to melt it with – a melting spoon over a tealight for the beads, or a glue gun for the sticks
Our guides Melting sealing wax and Wax seal stamps: an impression that works explain it step by step.
Beads or sticks?
You melt sealing wax beads in the spoon. That way you can measure exactly and even combine two colours in one seal. Three beads make a seal of about 25 mm, and a 25 g pack is enough for around 20 seals.
Sealing wax sticks fit glue guns for 11 mm sticks. This is quicker when you need lots of seals at once, for wedding invitations, for example. One stick is enough for about 12 to 16 seals.
Both kinds are flexible: the finished seal does not break when the envelope or card bends.
Colours
Beads and sticks come in more than 40 colours – from gold, antique gold and copper through burgundy, fir green and slate blue to light shades such as blush, lavender and mint. For the beads, there is also a mixed pack.
What are wax seals for?
For envelopes, wedding and birthday invitations, thank-you cards and to close gift wrap. Our guide Wrapping gifts with paper and a seal shows how a seal sits on a present.
Frequently asked questions
Is sealing wax the same as “Siegellack”?
Almost. Siegellack is the older German name for hard sealing wax, which can break when it bends. Our sealing wax is flexible and does not break when the paper bends.
How many seals does one pack make?
Around 20 seals of about 25 mm with 25 g of beads, and about 12 to 16 with one stick.
