What makes a wrap special?
A single eye-catcher on a calm surface. Two competing elements cancel each other out – a wax seal next to a bow next to a stamped pattern does not give threefold effect, it gives none. Decide on one and leave out the rest, and you are done before the others have started.
This section is about exactly these decisions: which paper, where the closure sits, what belongs on the tag and what replaces a bow. The technique behind it – how a seal is made or how a stamp prints cleanly – is covered by the sealing articles and under stamping.
Which paper carries a wrap?
Sturdy paper holds edges, thin paper wraps around curves. For a box the first is the better choice, for anything irregular the second. Patterned paper takes less addition than plain – a seal on a calm sheet is an eye-catcher, the same seal on a floral pattern is one more element among many.
An in-between solution that is often overlooked: plain paper as the base and a narrow strip of patterned paper as a band. That gives you both – the calm surface and the pattern – without them competing for the same spot.
How do you fold paper cleanly?
Measure the paper scarce, sharpen the edges with a fingernail before gluing, and put the overlap on the underside. The most common mistake is generosity: take paper amply and you get folds at the corners, because the material has to go somewhere. Cut scarce, it lies flat.
The wax seal sits on the overlap it holds together – not centred on the surface. Then it is closure and ornament at once, and nothing extra needs gluing. A seal in the middle of a closed surface looks like a sticker that happened to land there.
What replaces a bow?
Three things, all from stationery: a narrow paper strip as a band all round, a washi band in the same place, or a stamped border straight onto the paper. All three share the same advantage – they do not add bulk, and the wrap stays flat enough for an envelope or a mailer.
If you stamp, test the ink first on a scrap of the same paper. On coated gift wrap some stamp inks never dry through and smear during wrapping – scrap paper shows that in two minutes, the finished parcel shows it too late.
The tag takes the name and one short sentence. A date turns it into something that gets kept instead of vanishing with the paper. If you do not know what to write: the occasion is enough. “For the new flat, September” beats any phrase.
